With Orb the iPhone/Touch can access your home PC and turn it into a very limited kind of on-demand music service. Orb is accessed through Safari web browser on the iPhone or iPod touch. Orb delivers your streams in MP4 to your iPhone or iPod touch.
Orb is basically is a remote control application that lets you access all your media files from your iPhone, somewhat like a Slingbox without the hardware. Sending a link to friends in an SMS chat session will allow them to listen to the song.
To get it going now follow these simple steps.
Once you are logged in you will have a nice iPhone style menu with options to see Top Rated, Most Played, Playlists, Recently Played, Recently Added, Artists, Albums, Genres and Browse by Folders.
You can even search for specific tracks. Another exciting feature is the option to resume the last stream that you had going previously, which is great if you are listening to audio books on your iPhone. Tracks are shown with the album cover arts and you can even rate the songs from here.
From the iPhone interface you can also edit a grip of settings such as setting your connection speed, changing the layout, and restarting the Winamp Remote server.
Note: The Orb Winamp Remote is a Windows only application that requires Winamp Player. However during our tests we only had to install the Winamp Remote and it automatically plugged itself into the music files from the iTunes library. Streaming will undoubtedly require a WiFi connection and will most likely not work too well over EDGE.
Here is a demo of an iPhone using the Winamp remote to play music from a home pc.
