Tips for using iPod touch / iPhone apps

Most of the apps listed here are written to take advantage of the Safari web browser in your iPhone or iPod touch. If you are not using one of these devices you can still test out most of the apps on your Windows PC or Mac as long as you are using the latest Safari Web browser from Apple to see the most likely resemblance of what the apps would look like in an iPhone or iPod touch.

  • Apps filed under mobile-only render differently if you access them from the Safari browser on your iPhone or iPod touch. Therefore these apps will not look the same when you load them from your regular Windows or Mac browsers but in most cases they will at least show you the non-mobile version of the app.

A Note to iPod touch users: The Safari web browser on the iPod touch and the iPhone have separate device identifiers and build numbers. Application developers are in the process of updating their apps to allow both devices through. In the mean time some mobile-only apps might not work correctly on the iPod touch.
The iPod Touch user-agent string is: Mozila/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Geckto) Version/3.0 Mobile/3A101a Safari/419.3
The iPhone user-agent string is: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1C28 Safari/419.3

  • Apps listed under the software category are native applications. Native apps are like software programs, so you need to install them on your iPhone or iPod touch before you can run them. Most of these native 3rd party apps should be installed using Installer.app or iBrickr. Read the instructions on each app for more information.
