CauseWorld review

While apps are primarily designed with the user in mind, CauseWorld is an app whose purposes revolve around benefitting others. CauseWorld is a charitable organization that teamed up with various sponsors and businesses to create a simple way for you to get involved. You get to donate to a variety of causes simply by being where you are. CauseWorld will use your current location to scan for stores nearby. Once you are in the store or in the area, you can “check-in” (no purchase necessary) for karma points, which you can save to donate to a cause of your choice.

CauseWorld launched with two big sponsors, Citi and Kraft Foods, who have pledged to back every karma a user earns. You can earn 5 karma points daily just by accessing the app while store check-ins usually redeem for 10 karma points. You can check-in anywhere once everyday. The items you can give is designated by the amount of karma you donate. For example, the average American produces 50-100 lbs. of carbon a day and 1 karma will offset 2 lbs. of carbon emissions. Thirty karmas will provide clean water to one person in Sudan for a month and for 100 karmas, a tree will be planted in the rainforest. As of this posting, there is currently a promotion doubling whatever amount of karma that is donated to the Red Cross for Haitian relief, but you do ultimately have the option to choose what charity your karma goes to.

CauseWorld uses both a leveling and achievement system that can be integrated with Twitter and Facebook to invite others and further encourage users participating to continue checking-in for karma.
