Mobo Studios has released a new iPhone app called Colorix, a game that is a distant relative of Bejeweled and Tetris. What’s the same is that you still need to line up three or more of the same colors, but what’s different is that there are three objects that roll down at once. Oh, and the colors are in the form of pretty pretty marbles.
You can’t change the vertical position of the three marbles to horizontal, but you can switch the order of the colors by swiping up or down on the screen. Swipe left or right to move the tiny tower in either direction; double tap the screen to make the tower fall faster (and gain more points). Of course, matching more of the same color (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) will bring you more points, but Colorix also gives you lots of bonus points for chain explosions or crazy formations (like the zebra) made of the same color; reading the tips and tricks will reveal which ones. Certain special colors have special rules: for instance, rainbow marbles fit to every color except black, black marbles disappear after a certain amount of time, and white marbles (which only come in higher levels) change to a different color once they fall.
Colorix is nearly worth its price tag for the graphics themselves. The marbles are all gorgeously rendered and actually have the look of marbles while rolling down, so the physics are excellent as well. The backgrounds are quite tastefully done: they’re colorful themselves, but quiet enough not to distract from the game on hand. Comparatively, there’s not much to say about the sound effects; just the sound of marbles clinking together and the usual sparkling noise from a combination exploding. The fact that the marbles roll down in threes is what makes this game app challenging; you have to make sure that you’re getting the combination that you want in the end, and of course they roll down faster and faster as the game progresses. Give the Lite version a try first if the $2.99 price tag makes you balk; you won’t regret that, at least.
