Hysteria Project

Fans of choose-your-own-adventure-type stories and gore would probably enjoy BulkyPix’s iPhone game app, Hysteria Project. Taking a page from horror films, it is a first-person-perspective game that features you as the victim of an axe murderer–someone who seriously wants you dead. It is your objective to save yourself by escaping his clutches and getting away. Impressively, Hysteria Project uses actual film sequences in the game, to increase the horror experience.

The game app begins with you waking up in a deserted cabin with your hands and feet bound with tape, so your first objective is to figure out how to free yourself. When you do, you must run through the forest to try to escape. Throughout the journey, a red hand icon will show up and allow you to make choices: for example, you can either run or hide. Whether you live or die depends on the outcome of your choices. If you aren’t quick enough to tap the hand icon, it’s game over for you.

Hysteria Project is definitely creepy and atmospheric; the background music and sound effects usually complement the film sequences, all of which serve to heighten tension. There only seems to be one correct path to win the game, however, so frequent replays are likely as you’re trying to find the right decisions. Also, touchscreen interaction is scattered and less common than usual iPhone game apps, so that may be a point of dissociation. It is most certainly not a game for the faint of heart, but would probably work better as an actual film rather than a game.
