It seems as though Donut Games wanted their new iPhone game app, Spikey’s Bounce Around, to include both ends of the spectrum, from little-girl-cute to little-boy-tough. In this game, you must help Spikey — a creature that looks like the business end of a mace — free his friends, sacred butterflies who have been trapped inside glass jars.

You do this by plowing through obstructive flowers in Magic Gardens (there are 50 Magic Gardens to get through). Touch anywhere on the screen and move your finger to aim Spikey. The more flowers you go through in a shot, the more points you get. Once all the flowers are out of the way, the glass jar will fall and break, releasing the trapped butterfly. Be careful, though, as some glass jars contain wasps instead of butterflies. Spikey’s spikes come in handy, as he can stick to walls; even better, in higher stages there are objects that act as bumpers (you know what this is if you’ve played pinball before). You have a limited number of shots to free the butterflies; using them all up before doing so means you lose that stage.

The objective of this game app is straightforward, but success is trickier to pull off than you might expect. There is no trajectory path shown, so you have to experiment with Spikey to find out just how far he can jump before you get the hang of it. Luckily, this iPhone app also allows replays, so you can play a level as many times as you like if you’re a perfectionist. Of course, stages increase in difficulty, so your strategy skills will get a workout as well. The background music and sound effects are standard, and the graphics are above average, but this little game is really engaging and is worth a download.
