BillMinder review

Bills, bills, bills, we all suffer the pressure of keeping track of our payments and income. BillMinder is a solid attempt to make things easier for keeping your bills organized and up to date. BillMinder is brought to us by return7 for $0.99 and a Lite alternative is available on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. There is also a Push notification system that asks for a yearly payment $0.99 and is further explained in the Features section for BillMinder in the AppStore description.

Let’s begin with the features. This app has quite a few lovely features for keeping your bills tracked. Calendar system, account icons, pie charts, backups via email, password protection, account tracking, autopay, account histories, and 5 free themes to change the look.

It can be a hassle to remember how much to deposit into what account every single month. BillMinder attempts to organize the information you give it and keep everything at a glance so you can pay those bills properly. It can be quite a bit of a hassle to add multiple accounts and all your information, including Account Numbers, phone numbers, confirmation numbers, and amount payments, but luckily, you only have to enter this information once and select your individual accounts when you are adding new bills.

Some of the most useful features come from the ability to email myself an Excel spreadsheet of my information. If you are wary about paying a dollar a year for the Push notification, the icon of BillMinder on your iDevice will show you a little red bubble that displays how many bills you have to pay for. The number can be a bit wonky sometimes, like saying you have 10 bills to pay when I only entered 2. Going into the app and coming back out will fix this. Oh, and yes, this is one of the few apps that charge for Push notifications. I instinctively disagree with such a thing, even after reading the information on their forums about the payment to help their servers transmit the information. I dunno… I rather not since 99% of all apps I’ve seen don’t require it.

Some improvements: I would have liked to be able to enter data for interest rates or enter some way to choose the minimum payment. It would also be nice to keep track of late fees and maybe a feature that keeps bills tracked past one month. On the iPhone 4, they have local push notifications so this app really should get moving on the updates for that. I’ve ran into trouble duplicating the same bills, making bills show that they have been paid reliably, and other small glitches that do get in the way, so that really needs a fix for this app to be reliable.

Overall, this is a decent app with a nice amount of useful features. Some glitches are abound however, so be warned. I recommend the Lite version to see if this app is even for you. If you have a smaller amount of bills to keep up with, I recommend this app.
