picplz review

picplz is a social photography app that allows you to take pictures, caption and modify them, then post them onto a picplz website to share with other users. The developer of this app is Mixed Media Labs Inc. and it is 100% free. You can use picplz with an iPhone (iOS 4.1) or a 4th generation iPod Touch.

I have had experience with a lot of photo altering and enhancing apps, but picplz brings something new to the table. To begin with it is free, whereas most other apps that offer photo filters cost around three dollars. We have paid enough for the iPhone or iPod Touch we own, so it is nice to get freebies here and there that are not useless, flawed with tons of glitches, or unimaginative.

To begin using picplz, you find a picture you would like to use by either searching through your photo library or using the app integrated camera provided. Once there is an image on the screen, you can touch the magic wand button to scroll through a list of six different filters including, Enhanced Definition, High Contrast Monochrome, Russian Toy Camera, The 70s, Cross Process, and Instant Film. When you have chosen a filter, the app applies the changes, but you can always go back to the original image. You cannot mix and match filters. Another way you can use picplz to personalize a picture is to attach a location and caption to it. To attach a location to your photo you can either check in on Foursquare, or choose from a list of restaurants, sports venues, and concerts provided by the app. In addition to the picplz network, you can share your pictures via Facebook and Twitter.

The one thing that bothered me about picplz is that you have to start an account with them using your email address in order to access the app. Why is that necessary? I understand creating an account in order to upload and share my new and improved photos on the picplz network, but otherwise I cannot comprehend a reason for it. Other than that small and sort of anal-retentive gripe I found with this app I think playing with the picplz filters is a great source of amusement.
