iToons review

I confess that I’m one of those people that go straight for the funnies when picking up a newspaper–I can’t help it, reading actual news depresses me. So why not go for satire and comedy packed into a handful of panels, instead? Brite systems just made our lives easier with their handy app, iToons. It incorporates over 100 comic strips that are automatically updated daily for your viewing pleasure (internet connection needed).

Setting up your list of comics is super simple: just go into your settings and toggle whichever comic you want to read On. That’s it. All the comics selected will be listed right under settings. Tap on one, and you will be taken to that day’s comic. You can scroll in any direction by dragging your finger, and use the pinch-zoom function to your heart’s content.

Although the amount of comics you can view is staggeringly awesome, the layout and navigation need nothing short of a complete overhaul. Scrolling down the list holds over into the comic viewing page, which means that scrolling back up to hit the Back button to get back to the list sends you right to the beginning, no matter how far down the list you were. It’s annoying to have to scroll up and down over and over. Also, for some reason, the comic doesn’t wait until I try to pinch-zoom to enlarge; a single finger will do the trick, which then leaves me wrestling with shrinking it so I can figure out how the comic is structured. It’s great that I have so many choices, but less so if I have to fight with the app just to read it; I’d rather have the print version, if that’s the case.
