Super Radio review

Tired of listening to your own music over and over again? Give Wareous’ Super Radio iPhone app a go! For $0.99, you can have streaming internet AM/FM radio to enjoy (provided that you are connected by 3G or wi-fi). Of course, the Power, CH+, and CH- buttons retain the same functions as their physical counterparts. Tap the Info button on the bottom right of the radio face to open up your station list; from here, you can Auto-Tune to your local streaming stations or add stations (tap the + button on the top left) by searching with your city. There are many sorts of channels to choose from: sports, news, music, etc. Once you’ve customized your Station List, pick one, lean back as the app searches for it, and enjoy (plug into speakers for better sound).

Super Radio tries to be as realistic as possible, with its old-fashioned speaker look and simulated tuning sounds. The surface even collects dings as you listen for an extended period of time. A little modern update, however, gives the radio app artist and song title displays–which are useful for those ever-present questions of “Who sang this song/what is this song called?”–which interchange with a time display (not really necessary, since you’re probably not looking at the iPhone screen while using the Super Radio app; but it’s functional). The database of streaming stations continues to be updated, thank goodness; if one cannot find three major radio stations of the Los Angeles area, then there has to be some changes, stat. A big problem is the extreme lag when manually searching for stations, so some patience is required there. However, Super Radio is a nice change of pace, and fairly reminiscent for those who were around during the cassette tape era, so take this chance to mix the old with the new and enjoy some musical goodness.
