Color Petals review

Color Petals is an app that combines the joy of using math with playing a puzzle game. The game was developed by Andrei Grichine for an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad and costs $0.99. There is a lite version of the app you can try out for free before making the purchase. When I started playing Color Petals I thought, anything to help me practice my math skills, which have unfortunately been fading. It is not the most exciting app game I have played, but it is fun.

You start with the math function of Addition as you are given a number on a petal in the middle of a wheel that has 8 slots around the edges and then the one in the middle. Along the side of the screen are 5 unmarked petals waiting to release numbered petals that float to the center where the wheel is located. Mostly everyone knows how compute Addition but you have to think quickly.

When you hit Go, the numbered petals that float in have to be guided to either empty petal holders or placed on top of the numbered petal that equals the number in the middle. That is probably confusing to read, but if the petals lining the side of the screen let out a 5 and there is already a 5 petal on the wheel and in the middle of the wheel is the number 10, then you place the 5 petal on top of the other 5 petal and you get points for adding to 10.

The number in the middle then changes and you repeat the process. If you score enough points you get the next round, Subtraction. Just as Addition is the easiest math function and then Subtraction and so on, as the levels get harder so do the functions you have to perform to gain points.

Color Petals does not get dull. It is shameful to be out of college and not able to do simplistic math calculations quickly in your head. The app is fun and challenging and allows me to build my basic arithmetic skills back up.
