Snowing Words review

Snowing Words is a vocabulary game app that tests your ability to unscramble words under pressure. It was developed by Leon Huang for an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad and costs $0.99. There is a blizzard out, it is snowing words, and it is up to you to decipher the jumbled words located on the snowflakes falling from the sky before they hit the snow banks below. As time goes on, and you begin to slip up allowing snowflakes to accumulate on the ground, the snowy hills swell and the time you have to unscramble decreases, giving rise to panic and widening the margin of error.

When you begin, the snowflakes have words like WOC written across them so it takes you less than half of a second to come up with COW. As the game progresses, however, even the shorter words start getting confusing. I got hung up on HICP because for some odd reason CHIP did not come to mind. Some of the words confounded me: SSLI (SISAL) I had never heard it before in my life, but apparently it is a Mexican agave with large fleshy leaves, cultivated for fiber production. The beauty of this app is that it inspires you to look up mystery words, even if only for your own peace of mind.

If the snowflakes get to the bank you do not get points deducted from your score. You have a choice of Easy, Normal, or Hard mode to play on. While in the Easy mode you get words like DDA, (ADD, DAD) in the Hard mode you get PREPC (CRÊPE) and ELTHO (HOTEL). The game offers thousands of 3, 4, 5, and 6 letter words to prevent you from getting bored with it quickly. There are also 14 achievements that you can unlock while playing the game. Openfeint is provided in the app to keep track of your scores on a global level, but you need Internet access to use this feature.

Snowing words is the perfect game to play when you need something distracting and user-friendly to get you through times of sheer and utter boredom. It does get a little mind numbing after awhile, but it is definitely one of those games that you keep coming back to.
