WordZinga! review

WordZinga is a word game where you fill in the blanks to complete a word. There are letters that take up parts of the word that you have to work with in order to complete the word. This app is for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and is available for $1.99 by McNatton Technologies LLC.

There are tons of word games out there and WordZinga has a nice little twist to the normal ‘making-words’ engine that a lot of apps use. WordZinga works by giving you a, for example, a five letter word. The spaces are [ ][ ][E][ ][N]. Your goal is to fill in the 3 blank spots. You can go with almost anything that would work for those 3 missing letters. Queen, clean, or ocean would all count and you get points and you can move on to the next word. This works very well.

I spent nearly 20 minutes with my friends trying to figure out some of the more difficult combinations. Seriously, these are brain-stumpers in this game, which then leads to the great “AH-HA!” moment where your whole group in unison, realize the answer. These moments are really great and it almost always feels like you earned it.

The graphics are super simple. You have a colorful backdrop, usually images of nature or textures of cloth. Simple background noise usually. I have an issue with the random keyboard they use. The iPhone has its own keyboard that works perfectly well, but for some reason, they felt compelled to add an alphabetical keyboard rather than a QWERTY style one that I was really used to. Really wished for some option of swapping it.

The game gives you a set number of skips you can do or hints you can get. Hints usually show you a word that would work for your current puzzle, but it will not let you use that hinted word. It’s just to show you what word would work and then it’s back to your brain power. It works really well and never just gives you the answer.

I was pleasantly surprised with this app, it made me feel good for solving the word and me and my friends had a great time on a single app. Is it worth the payment? YES. If you like word games, you might just love this app as much as I do.
