Mega Man II review

Looking for a good challenging blast from the past game for your iPhone? Mega Man II from Capcom mobile brings the classic arcade shooter to the iPhone and iPod touch. The game features retro arcade style joystick controllers, buttons, and graphics which make it fun to play and easy to get addicted to. Choose from nine characters including Air Man, Wood Man, Heat Man, Metal Man, Flash Man, Crash Man, Bubble Man, and Dr. Willy.

Mega Man II has done a great job of porting this game to the iPhone featuring the challenging gameplay, timeless soundtrack music and pixel-based graphics. The iPhone screen is shrunk down even further to create an arcade table interface complete with a joystick and video game screen shown as if through a TV projector stuffed inside your screen. The controls in the game, which use their realistic looking 3-D joystick are easy to use, but can get somewhat challenging to use if you have large fingers. Also running and jumping to clear obstacles can be tricky at first due to the use of the virtual d-pad, but being super difficult was always the desirable characteristic of the Mega Man back in days. What’s cool about Mega Man II on the iPhone is that you can play it in landscape mode and the controls adjust accordingly to give you a bit more room for your fingers. Navigating through the game options is done using the A and B buttons just like the classic arcade game years ago.

Pick from easy, normal, or hard levels and start a new game or you can continue where you left off. Pick a character and you’re ready to play. The A button is pressure sensitive which is used for jumping. Do a quick tap/jump or tap and hold for longer/higher jumps. Use the B button to shoot and also to go back when in the options mode.

The options in the game allow you to pick from classic mode, and let you force either landscape or portrait modes; great for when you want to play the game in bed. You can also turn off the sound here or just adjust the volume of the audio. If you are a fan of classic arcade shooters, Mega Man II is a good iPhone game that will excite all hard-core Mega Man fans. You can buy the game in the app store for $2.99 or sample the lite version for free before you buy. And the good news is now there is no need for funky NES emulators since you have the real thing created for the iPhone.
