TankTigers review

World War II buffs will probably notice the title’s nod to the German tiger tanks used during that war. As named, TankTigers is a simple 3D tank shooter released by Rusty Raven.

Though TankTigers has a single player mode, its most novel aspect is its multi-player function. With it, you can play against your friends through Bluetooth or your WiFi network as well against strangers through its Internet Play. However, as far as this app goes, there’s nothing else that really sets it apart from any other app out there. The gameplay is limited. Even in real life, tanks never really considered assets based on their speed and agility and the same holds true for the ones in TankTigers. Tanks are slow and bulky and awkward to maneuver. Controls consist of a two directional pads, one to move the tank and the other to move the turret. It only moves from left to right which means the reach of your shot is always fixed.

There are 5 tanks to choose from, with simple distinctions in performance, cost and type however it doesn’t seem to really track how much money you have or anything at all so you can pretty much choose whichever one you want. The tanks and map is 3D, but again, they are very basic and the special effects is even more disappointingly so.

Rusty Raven also released a free version of TankTigers, TankTigersES which you can use to play online but you are limited to one tank and one map. Within this version, you have the option of “upgrading” in-app, which really just means you can buy the other tanks and maps.

Considering that it is going for $4.99 in the AppStore, I would definitely recommend first downloading the TankTigersES version to see if you find its multiplayer enjoyable enough to merit spending any money on it.
