Pop-A-Tronic review

Big Blue Bubble has released Pop-A-Tronic, an arcade-type game of matching, speed, and fun.

The game begins after you choose a speed. Tap three or more color-matching bubbles in chains (they don’t have to line up in a row or column, but they can’t be diagonal) on the touchscreen for basic points; chains of five or more bubbles garner bonus points. If you tap one that isn’t in a group of three, it turns to junk that gets recycled once it hits the bottom. As chains of bubbles are popped, the purifier meter on the top of the screen will fill up (the bigger the chains, the faster the meter will fill). Once full, you can tap the Purifier and then tap a bubble to pop every bubble on the screen of that same color. There are also random Charge Bombs (indicated by a ticking sound) which you can activate by tapping. You then get a five-second span of time to charge it by tapping rapidly; the explosion takes out all the bubbles around the bomb. Of course, all the objects fall progressively faster on each level.

Another in a long line of Bejeweled-esque games, Pop-A-Tronic manages to be innovative and fun enough to catch and keep your interest. The matching aspect of it is nothing new, but the Purifier and Charge Bombs are great additions. They really help when it seems like you’re about to fill up the entire screen and lose. Needless to say, once you explode or get rid or nearly everything on the screen, it takes a while before you can get a sizable chain to work with. Arguably the most fun portion of the Pop-A-Tronic iPhone app are the Charge Bombs; watching them grow as you are tapping against the clock holds an odd sort of thrill. The groovy background music fits the game perfectly, as does the whimsical nature of the backgrounds. All in all, an enjoyable and simple game great for all ages.
