Doughnuts review

Who doesn’t like doughnuts? The crispy, moist, savory, and delicious confections have now come to us in app form. Doughnuts is an app meant to tease and torture its user by taking a look-but-cannot-touch approach to making doughnuts. It was developed by NGS Technologies for an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and costs $0.99.

When you start the app with some dough poured into a doughnut maker your mouth already begins watering. You then close the lid and wait for the doughnut to bake. It comes out seemingly dripping with grease waiting for you to decorate it. You are given four options, Frosting 1, Frosting 2, Toppings, and Icing Pen, to make the doughnut as beautiful, eccentric or appetizing as you can. Yes, there are 1st and 2nd Frosting options because while Frosting 1 provides you with every color in the rainbow, Frosting 2 gives you textures and designs like nuts, sprinkles, and glaze. Toppings features everything from gummy worms to candy corn, coconut to sugar crumbs.

With the Icing Pen you can write messages or draw pictures on the doughnut. When you are done with your magnificent creation you can tap the doughnut box at the bottom of the page to look over the options provided to take the doughnut public. You can email it, post it to Facebook or Twitter, save it to your photos, and send it to a friend or submit it to a Hall of Fame using OpenFeint. You can also “eat” the doughnut by tapping on the screen that you are drooling all over. The developers were definitely occupied with details with this app because when you get to finally consume the doughnut you can choose the type of plate and tablecloth that you will eat on.

I guess you can consider this app an exercise in creativity and it is cheap enough to fight against the thought of, “why do I need this?” I got a good amount of use out of it before my interest tapered off but I can always pull it up when I need to make a birthday doughnut for a friend.
