Finger Spiro+ review

Anybody remember playing with stencils when they were young? How about drawing spirals with gears and wheels? chlova’s new app, Finger Spiro+, tries to recreate this childhood activity on the iPhone. You have a space of 960×640 to work with, along with four canvas backgrounds to choose from (tap Edit in the top right corner to do so). Swipe up and down along the three different gears on the left side and tap to select or change them. The gears all have black dots lined up on them, which represent the holes that you’d normally fit your pen or pencil into; different holes changes the shape of your spiral. When the chosen gear appears within the wheel, tap the hole you want to start drawing from, or just tap the gear. However, once you go through the holes once, a Move Canvas button will pop up, in which you can tap and drag to move the wheel around the canvas. You can also double tap the button or the gear to switch between them.

Swipe up and down the right column to choose one of seven colors, and then you’re good to go. Tap on the gear and drag it around the wheel clockwise or counterclockwise to create your masterpiece. There are also options to buy another gear, save/email your creation, and to clear the canvas. Finger Spiro+ is a clever art app that’s just perfect for the iPhone’s touch-sensitive interface…however, it needs slight improvements–such as fixing the drawing lag (while dragging the gears) and adding more colors–to make this beautiful idea an even better experience worthy of your $1.99. But until that happens, hearken back to ye golden days and have fun creating pretty circles with this iPhone app (and hope hard for fast updates).
