Siri hack

Want Siri on your iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G? You can get the Siri user interface running on your iPhone 4 using these steps. The main requirement is that you have already installed iOS 5 and have your iPhone or iPod touch jailbroken. These steps are for users who are comfortable with jailbreak apps and should be performed at your own risk.

Important: This hack as it stands now is only able to display the Siri user interface but the voice commands won’t work. This is because the actual Siri voice commands are sent to Apple’s server and must validate to be coming from an iPhone 4S to work. Since Apple does not authorize anything but the iPhone 4S for Siri this hack will only show you the Siri GUI and won’t respond to any voice commands. See below for an alternate mod which maybe on the way soon. This Siri hack will also be possible on iPad 2, but the limitation right now is that you have to be able to jailbreak your iPad 2 running iOS 5 which is not possible yet.

Ready to proceed? Let’s get going:

Pre-requisites

  1. iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G
  2. Jailbreak your iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G and the iOS 5 firmware using redsn0w 0.9.9b5 to get Cydia.
  3. Install an SCP application on your Windows (WinSCP) or Mac (Cyberduck).
  4. Install OpenSSH and iFile using Cydia.

Installing Siri on iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G:

  1. Download the Siri files.
  2. Open the SCP program on your desktop and log in to your jailboken iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G using the following info:
    – Host name: iPhone’s IP Address. Get it from: Settings > WiFi > Tap the Blue arrow for your WiFi Network > IP Address.
    – Username: root
    – Password: alpine
  3. Copy the Siri folder (AssistantServices.framework) from the extracted file you downloaded, to your device (/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks) using the SCP program.
  4. Copy the Siri Springboard folder (SpringBoard_Assistant_pics) to your device (/System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app) as well.
  5. Open iFile on your iPhone and edit the .plist file (N90AP.plist or N81AP.plist) in the same folder as before (/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app)
  6. Add this value to the .plist file: <key>assistant</key><true/> (after the <key>720p</key><true/> value)
  7. Save and close the file
  8. Create a new .plist named assistant here. Set its class as Boolean and change the Value to YES.
  9. ReSpring your device
  10. Now just hold the Home button to activate Siri.

Here is a video demo showing how to install Siri on a jailbroken iPhone 4 running iOS 5.

Update: Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has found that it is possible to get a fully working Siri on the iPhone 4 if you install a validation token pulled from a jailbroken iPhone 4S, although this part is not currently available to the public. Here is a video he has released that shows the fully functioning Siri on the iPhone 4.
