NPR News is the official iPhone app from npr.org with live streaming news content and special events plus written news articles, program and station guide. This free app is an excellent source for staying on top of hourly news updates, finding your local NPR stations, and listening to your favorite radio programs both in live streaming format and in pre-recorded streamed podcast format right on your iPhone. Listen to popular public radio programs like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Talk of the Nation, Fresh Air, Car Talk, and Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me. Another great feature of the NPR app is the ability to create a customized playlist of stories you like and hear it in any order or to save for later. Can’t get enough? You can even read the news and listen to the live stream simultaneously and download stories for offline reading.

To play live feeds, go to the Stations tab and browse to your favorite NPR station. Live stations are denoted by a red box saying “ON AIR” while recorded shows are labeled “ON DEMAND”. What’s great is now you can listen to NPR stations around the country at any time. There is also another link called “Find Live Streams” in the Programs tab which locates stations that are currently airing the show and starts streaming it live.

The NPR app also serves as a means for discovering NPR broadcast stations by GPS or Zip Code, which is great for people traveling with a detailed program guide.
