MusicID with Lyrics review

Looking for an iPhone app to let you view lyrics for the songs you’re playing? MusicID with Lyrics is a refreshingly useful iPhone app that does two things very well: recognizing your music and letting you read its lyrics. This app takes Shazam to the next level, but the strength of MuiscID is really in its full featured lyrics finder. MusicID identifies and tags songs by holding the iPhone up to the music. It also lets you view lyrics for the songs it finds. While you can get somewhat similar functionality in Shazam, you won’t find lyrics in Shazam Encore that frequently, and certainly not that easily. Gravity Mobile licenses the Gracenote database for MusicID so you have access to a deep searchable lyrics index at your fingertips in this app.

So here are all the ways you can use MusicID with Lyrics:

1. Find songs playing by holding the iPhone to your speakers.
What I like about this section is the colorful graphics while searching for songs, which makes the waiting process more entertaining than some other apps.

2. Get lyrics for songs playing in your iPod app
MusicID seamlessly integrates with your iPod app, and let’s you read the lyrics directly from there.

3. Search for songs by name
This part works great, but only if you type in the entire song name, partial words don’t work.

4. Search for artists by name
Type in any artist name and MusicID returns a list of their songs. The songs are not tucked into folders by album, so you just scroll down to find the song you want. There is an album cover art for each song to help you visually detect songs quicker.

5. Search for song lyrics by keyword
MusicID with Lyrics actually lets you search for lyrics by keyword and shows you a list of browsable results. This is where I think this app is really above the competition. It’s great if you remember a few words form a song which isn’t actually playing. The search results show a preview of the lyrics which is handy. And best of all, the search results are lightning fast thanks to the awesome underlying technology.

6. Browse a list of popular songs
I’m not sure what logic is used to place the songs in this list. It looks like perhaps it could be a list of the most tagged songs. Either way it’s a fun way to go through and see what others are listening to and discover new music.

A couple of final selling points on MusicID with Lyrics are the similar Songs and Biography features. There are also YouTube videos listed inline which open outside in YouTube app, and a link to iTunes to purchase music. The MusicID app will also work on an iPod touch but you’ll need a mic enabled headset for the tagging feature there.

Overall, if you’re looking for an awesome lyrics app for your iPhone, MusicID with Lyrics will do everything you need and a lot more. Its user interface and presentation is very clean and uncluttered. MusicID with Lyrics can probably help you consolidate a few apps on your iPhone into one. Definitely worth its 99 cent price tag, and a great reference app for when you want to read and follow the lyrics of a song.
