Touch Racing Nitro – Ghost Challenge! review

Touch Racing Nitro is a racing game where you control an RC on different tracks against other opponents. This app was released by Bravo Game Studios for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for $3.99 or the free Lite version.

Let’s begin with the look of this game. It’s bright, colorful, and the car models are really well done when you are in the selection screen. The tutorial level shows lots of nice textures and the overall presentation is well done. In the actual races, the level graphics look really good and has small touches of detail that really give life to the stages.

The vehicles are all these tiny little RC racecars, Optimus Prime trucks, or the toys you would find at Toys R’ Us. They have a really nice charm with customizable colors and really nice in-game sprites, despite how small they are.

There is a challenge mode where you try to beat the ghost image of your friends’ high scores and best times. This is a unique way to implement multiplayer and is appreciated.

The one issue with Touch Racing Nitro comes with controls and level designs. Controls are difficult to master. The RC will follow where your thumb is, but it takes a big long arc to turn properly. I had many instances where I crashed into walls, over the track and ended up in the wrong direction leading to a loss. When the pressure is on, in the last lap, its easy to lose because of a wrong turn take takes you into a wall block and getting stuck. I won a majority of the levels nevertheless.

Some of the walls have little blocks in them, so you have to be careful. These are places where you are going to get stuck if you clip into them. If you have large fingers, your finger can cover your view of the coming track and obstacles.

Touch Racing Nitro – Ghost Challenge! is a great game overall with amazing design work. The graphics look really good. I’d love to see a different scheme for gameplay controls. Maybe some on-screen control joysticks or maybe sliders that recreate the RC car controls from the real toys would be nice. Also an in-car point of view would be awesome.
