Monster HavocJust in time for Halloween, you can grab Gammabyte Entertainment’s free iPhone app Monster Havoc. The goal of the game is to obtain enough power to kill your enemies before they kill you. As gruesome as that sounds, it is done with cute floating horror mascots and cookies.

There are three levels for each of the ten different monsters to choose from, each with a different skill set. However, the default is a Level one monster called Meanz—an adorable Jason-esque face—at least until you kill enough enemies to unlock the other ones. To play, simply tilt the iPhone in the direction you want the monster to float, which is generally towards the cookies (to power up) and away from the enemies (which mean death). In classic Snake fashion, a new enemy pops up the second a cookie gets eaten. To kill them, just eat enough cookies to fill up the power bar on the right, after which you will gain one of four different power-ups; tap the power-up to utilize it. Rage and Gas are both duration power-ups (so watch your power bar when using), while Fireball and Belch are instant power-ups. Pause and stop are in the lower left-hand corner.

Monster Havoc is both well designed and well executed. The graphics for the background are atmospheric, but the work on the monsters is excellent: they’re both appealing and utilized perfectly in this game app. The trance background also works well in this game, but the sound effects definitely take the prize—check them out when you’re using the power-ups…they’re exactly what you think they sound like. This iPhone app is easy to get the hang of and easy to control, but glare from outside lighting might make several angles difficult to see. Nevertheless, Monster Havoc is perfect for the season and a lot of fun to play.
