With the popularity of life-simulation games such as The Sims, it’s no wonder that some of it bleeds over into iPhones and iPod Touches. In this case, the entertainment app My Girl, in which you create and stylize a 3D girl and her surroundings.
The app launches with a girl in a random background. You can change her clothes, hair/skin tone, and background by tapping on the face icon in the lower left corner. Each tab gives you three options to choose from, or you can hit Random to have the program choose for you; tap OK on the top right corner to accept all changes.
If you swipe left and right, you spin the girl around; swiping up and down with move your perspective between top down and face-to-face. Shake the device or tap her head for a little extra, or just watch her stretch in the interim. All these movements can be performed and watched at any angle you set. Put the device in landscape position to enjoy more of the scenery, or tap the email button on the lower right side to send a screenshot.
As an app user, there is little I can actually do with My Girl. The choices are few (she only has three different kinds of t-shirts and shorts–I mean, really now) and the action even less. After watching for a minute and tapping on her once or twice, my options are exhausted. The 3D rendering is fairly well-done and the music actually has a great vibe to it, but I hope the developers are planning to come out with a lot more pizazz, because My Girl is straight-up boring as it is–”at least she’s pretty” comes to mind. Now, as a female, I can’t help but think: why?? Without going into rant-mode, I think this statement sums up my feelings on this app quite well. It is hardly worth $1.99, much less the original price tag of $3.99.
