Augmented Reality mixed with Twitter on your iPhone yield Twitter 360, the new app that uses your iPhone 3GS camera to display and track your Twitter friends in cool 3D online environments. Using the geotagging feature of Twitter this app will label your tweets with your location. Although this is not a fully functional Twitter app, it’s a great start for merging Twitter and reality.
So what does this all mean for you? By adding your GPS location information, your Twitter buddies will see your physical location. To turn on this setting go into your settings page on twitter.com and check the box labeled “Enable geotagging”. Upon opening up the Twitter 360 app it will update the “location” field data on your Twitter account with your exact coordinates if you allow it to do so.
In the horizontal mode you see your friend’s current location and in the vertical mode your see where they last posted from. A blue arrow shows where your friend’s tweet came in on the map, and you see this updated in real time as you walk around. This is pretty wild considering you can now use twitter as a form of text messaging with GPS built in to meet your friends in real time. If you want you can view all your best friends via the augmented reality feature in Twitter 360, assuming they have also enable the geotagging feature. At any time, if you choose to go stealth, you can do so by sliding the geolocalization option in the settings to off which will disable geotagging as well.
Twitter 360 is a neat idea for using the GPS in you iPhone 3GS to get you into virtual Twittering. Give it a whirl if you’re up for the next wave.
